Environmental Policy

Ennerdale Scout Centre is situated in the heart of ‘Wild Ennerdale’ on the south west shore of Ennerdale Water, which provides public water supply for Copeland and the surrounding area, operated and maintained by United Utilities. The site is bordered on the south side by the River Ehen which hosts one of the few sustainable populations of Fresh Water Mussels in England and is designated as a SSSI and SCA ranking highly on the European list. This designation means that the river itself and the riverbank are out of bounds for any activities.

Although the effluent from the septic tank which serves the site does not discharge directly into a watercourse, but through a ground infiltration system, we are conscious of our obligation to manage and maintain the installation in a responsible manner. For this reason, the use of bleaches is prohibited and we provide all necessary basic toiletries, cleaners etc. for occupants of the Chalet & Bothy which are environmentally friendly of the Low Phosphate variety.

We respectfully request that you assist us by adopting this policy in your choice of personal toiletries, detergents etc. when visiting the site.
